Upendra Tripathy, Director General International Solar Alliance, has had an illustrious career as an innovative and enterprise oriented policy-maker. Former Secretary to Government of India in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Mr Tripathy made exceptional and stellar contribution towards formulating policies that welcomed unprecedented interest from investors, thus opening the channels that transformed Renewable Energy sector of India, for all times to come. Under his leadership, India saw a massive proliferation of Renewable Energy through the world’s largest Renewable Energy expansion programme.

While spearheading the sector, Mr. Tripathy demonstrated remarkable institution building capacity by strengthening the key nodes like Solar Energy Corporation of India, National Institute of Solar energy, National Institute of Wind energy, and National Institute of Bio energy in India, by providing adequate push to the infrastructure development, and introducing new and imaginative ways to expedite both human and financial resource mobilisation. Mr. Tripathy gave great importance to drawing baseline for renewable energy project implementation in India during his tenure as Secretary to GOI, thus providing a cornerstone for sustainable job opportunities, R& D and development of financial mechanisms contributing substantially towards achievement of energy access goals of India.

Upendra Tripathy’s proactive and innovative leadership in taking the RE sector forward, both nationally and globally reflects clearly in the honours conferred upon him from time to time. Recipient of the PM’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration in 2009, Upendra Tripathy was named recently as one among World’s 100 Most Influential People in Climate Policy for 2019 by Apolitical. Apart from that, Mr. Tripathy has received Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) Award for outstanding contribution to Renewable Energy Sector and Crusader of the year for Renewable Energy award by UBM IN 2016.

As a distinguished administrator and policy-maker, Mr Tripathy has 36 years of diverse cross sectorial experience namely in land administration, rural development, agriculture, education, social inclusion, environment, petroleum and natural gas, and transportation at federal, provincial and local administrations in India.
